10월 13일자 뉴욕 타임즈에 실린 기사다. 오늘 들어가보니 탑기사인듯 홈페이지
전면에 등장했다. 예전에 iPod 나노 제품 설명할때 연말에 선물을 하나 더준다고
해서 많은 사람들이 기대하고 또 비디오가 돌아가는 iPod를 예상하는 사람들도
많았던것 같은데 역시나 그런것 같다.

근데 난 왠지 iPod 디자인은 맘에 들지 않는다. 단조로우면서도 화려한 느낌의 애플
식의 디자인이 표현된것 같지 않다. 개인적으로 Mac의 디자인은 상당히 대단하
다고 생각하기 때문에 iPod이 더 이상하게 보이는 것 같다.

더더군다나 이번 비됴 들어가는 iPod은 세로라는게 왠지 어색하다..LCD창보다
여백의 크기가 훨씬 크다니..이 어찌 비효율적이지 않은가-.-;;

그런 면에서는 얼마전에 나온 iRiver의 제품이 상당히 혁신적이었다. 기체 단면
전체를 LCD로 구성하고 콘트롤은 그 위에 얇은 판을 덮어 전후좌우로 클릭하게
만든 아이디어는 정말 쏀쓰있었고 실제로도 그 작은 제품사이즈로 만족할만한
LCD화면크기를 보여주었기에 상당히 맘에 들었다.

작고 얇게 만드는 기술이야..대단하지만..확실히 미국은 우리나라보다 mp3 업체
나 시장이 작아서 그런건지 아니면 미국인의 디자인에 대한 생각이 우리랑 틀린
건지..여튼..iPod이 잘나가는 건 mp3업체의 홍수속에 살고 있는 나로서는 잘 이
해가 안된다.우리나라에서도 iPod이 어느정도 활약하는건 단순히 명품을 갖고자
하는 마음이 만드는 것은 아닌가 생각한다.

Apple Introduces iPod That Plays Videos

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct, 12 - Having conquered the world of consumer digital music, Apple Computer's chief executive, Steven P. Jobs, set his sights on television today, announcing products and services to deliver TV shows, short films and music video for viewing on personal computers and iPods.

Mr. Jobs undertook his newest effort to transform the world of video with only two partners, the Walt Disney Company, and his own Pixar movie studio and without the broad industry support he enjoyed from the music industry when he began his assault on digital music.

But in his typical fashion, Mr. Jobs concluded his 90-minute presentation by framing his plans in the broadest possible terms.

Indeed, Mr. Jobs couched his presentation in the terms of a drama in three acts, and he began with the introduction with a simple new Apple-designed computer remote control that makes it possible to control all of the media on the newest version of the iMac. This was introduced as the opening "act" of the new product extravaganza.

But the second act was the one most fans were waiting for: the new iPod.

Apple will sell a 30-gigabyte version of its iPod product line capable of playing video on a small 2.5-inch screen for $299 and a 60-gigabyte version for $399. Both will be available in black or white. In addition to being wider than its predecessors, the devices have a rounded bottom. The devices will hold up to 15,000 songs, 25,000 photos or 150 hours of video.

The iPods will support two video playback standards, h.264 and MPEG4, making it possible to play other videos besides the ones for sale on the iTunes store.

In endorsing handheld video, Mr. Jobs made an 180-degree about-face, reversing his criticism of the low-quality video that is available on portable, low-resolution devices. For the past two years he has been consistently critical of both the technology and the sociology of portable video - the idea that people will use the technology to watch videos in public places where they are engaged in other tasks.

Other portable media players already on the market from Microsoft and its hardware partners have received a lukewarm response from critics and consumers, because they are bulky and getting video onto them has been troublesome.

The third act of Apple's announcement today appears aimed at some of those shortcomings. The company is making available for download the new iTunes 6.0 music store, adding more than 2,000 music videos, six short films from Pixar Animation Studios, and five television shows from ABC and Disney Channel, including the immensely popular "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives."

Mr. Jobs said that current shows would be available the day after they are shown on network television, without advertisements, and that each episode would cost $1.99. But they will be available only in the United States. The music videos and short films will also cost $1.99 each.

Toward the end of the day's event, Mr. Jobs introduced Robert A. Iger, Disney's chief executive, who endorsed the new service as reflecting a key Disney strategy to marry technology and content.

Apple also took a major step toward telegraphing its strategic entry into the world of consumer electronics in the living room. The company introduced a wireless remote control unit with its newest generation of iMac personal computers, which will come in two models - one with a 17-inch screen ($1,299) and one with a 20-inch screen ($1,699).

In typical Apple style, the remote control had just six buttons. Mr. Jobs went to some pains to compare the Apple remote to competing remotes from Gateway and Dell Media Center personal computers, which each came equipped with more than 40 control buttons.

This is the second major set of product announcements that Apple has made in less than two months. In September, the company started selling the iPod Nano, a pencil-thin device that is narrower than a credit card. Apple sold one million of those devices, which are replacing its iPod Mimi players, in 17 days

The iPod announcement failed, however, to raise investors spirits, which were dampened Monday evening after the company reported iPod sales that did not meet analysts' expectations. The company sold 6.5 million players in its fiscal fourth quarter, up from 2 million for the comparable period a year earlier . But that did not live up to analysts' expectations for sales of 7 million to 7.2 million.

Apple's shares fell $2.34, or 4.5 percent, to close at $49.25 in Nasdaq trading today.

The company's quarterly profits quadrupled and revenue soared by almost 50 percent as sales of all products, including computers, increased at rapid rates.
